site STORY
What happens when you take a real estate engine's search page and stuff it with over seventy links? Information overload! This was exactly the problem that GyPSE's site was suffering, and FoundPages contracted me to come up with a solution.
My solution was to create a tabbed interface which would limit the number of options visible at any given by time, organized into categories. While most websites that use tabs feature a JavaScript implementation, I wanted to find another solution -- one that didn't break if the site's visitor had JavaScript disabled in their browser.
Inspired by some of Stu Nicholls' work, I decided to undertake a pure CSS solution. By implementing the page in CSS only, the page would be accessible to people who had JavaScript disabled, as well as to those who use text-only browsers and screen readers.
In the end, although doing the tabs in CSS was tricky, the overall look and feel of the site was much improved after my redesign. The clean design allowed people to see that GyPSE was a search engine first, and a directory of links second.
When they took my template and integrated it into their search engine, GyPSE ended up changing a number of aspects of my design and implementation. You can compare my template to their current website in the links at the left.
